Ninth House..... Don't Care About the Tenth

Updated: Apr 14, 2020

This book came with a whole lotta hype and very little to back it. 3 Troubled Stars.

Normally I don't reread books, and I certainly don't reread several chapters of the same book a day apart. But I did for this book. Because I did not understand anything that was going on!!! What on earth?!

I honestly feel like I missed something. Let me start by saying the writing was brilliant - the thought that must have gone into this was amazing. That alone got me to offer up 3 stars. That’s where the praise ends. This book went on for what felt like forever and I never once cared what was happening. I felt like I was skipping all over the place and never got a proper foothold on the story from the first chapter. Nothing of substance drove the plot and the fantasy aspect did little besides introduce nonsense words and confuse me more. No spoilers but it ended in a way that leads one to believe a sequel is coming. I won’t be bothering. Not sure what everyone loved so much and why this book got such hype. Differing opinions welcome. I’m lost on this one.

When I read I want get lost in the story- but not like, literally, lost.

Now, I admit, I haven’t had the opportunity to read anything else by this author. I understand that the majority of the hype came from the fact that she has put out some amazing work in the past. Just because you write something amazing before doesn’t automatically mean that you do it every time. The five star reviews on this one have me scratching my head. I will say that I can see that the author has a brilliant mind and will absolutely pick up something else by her to cleanse my palette.

The author wove a super intricate tale with lots of backstory and puzzles and layers and I dare say it was crazy awesome in her head when she thought it out- the problem is that I was not in her head when I read it, and I felt that the weaving of this tale dropped a few stitches in translation.

Semi-Spoilers- I will say there were some very cool concepts throughout the story- I’ve recently had the opportunity to speak with a Medium and she even mentioned some of the protection methods used by the main character, Alex, used to keep the ghosts away – from an otherworldly perspective the book definitely had intrigue for me.

What did you think? Let me know whether this one was what you hoped or fell flat.
