Class Mom...Perfect for Yoga Pants and a Starbucks

Class Mom

By Laurie Gelman

Witty and charming with enough intrigue to move it along at a quick pace.

This was a funny take on being the mom of a child in the early school years. To which I can very much relate- being the class mom myself for the last two years running, I have to say, boy am I grateful to the teachers that I’ve had! After reading this book, I’m thinking I’d better get out now.

The mom in question, Jenny, has two older daughters (both born when she was a young carefree unmarried twenty something) now both in college, and a five year old son with whom she joking refers to as her “first” husband (who happens to also be her only husband). It's that kind of groan inducing humor that actually made me laugh out loud at some points.

Creatively told through a series of class parent emails and narrative combined, this book was delightful and fun.

A perfect read to break up some of the heavier stuff I have been getting into recently (has anyone seen Erik Larson’s Splendid and the Vile?! That thing is a brick!).

The story itself is a little out there, with old relationships coming back into the picture and new one’s forming – some are perfect matched couples that you root for and some are scandalous and juicy. And then there’s a weird underlying mystery of a certain mom on the class email chain who doesn’t actually seem to exist- sounds odd, but it was enough to hold my interest to the very end though I will say the pay off wasn’t that satisfying- you could see it coming.

This was a solid 3.5 stars for me.
